Etymologically “Mod” means happiness and ‘ak’ means a small part. Hence ‘Modak’ is like a small portion of happiness that one can derive through this sweet.
It is called modak in Marathi,Konkani and in Gujarati language..modhaka or kadubu in Kannada. ..modhakam or kozhakkattai in Tamil and kudumu in Telugu. The steamed version is called ‘Ukdiche Modak’ and is eaten hot with with ghee & is even found in Japan where it is called ‘Kangidan’ and is offered to God ‘Kangiten’. During Ganesh Puja 21 Modaks are offered to Lord Ganesha. Hence Ganesha is called ‘ Modakpriya’.

This Ganesh Chaturthi, Sehat Ki Rasoi is in a celebration mood, with its festive recipes of “Modak” cooked by youtuber and blogger Hemlata Srivastava and ‘Rajgire Ki Kadhi’ made from superfood Amaranth flour by Shachi Jain.

Amaranth or Rajgira or Ramdana is indeed a wonder grain, packed with nutrition.

It is healthy and highly nutritious and energy giving.
