For the last few decades many alternative food habits emerged, besides the old Vegetarian, Non vegetarian and Eggitarian options. In 2007, UN FAO statistics indicated that Indians had the lowest rate of meat consumption in the world.India has more vegetarians than the rest of the world put together. In India, vegetarianism is usually synonymous with lacto vegetarianism. Most restaurants in India clearly distinguish and market themselves as being either “non-vegetarian“, “vegetarian“, or “pure vegetarian“.

With the motto  to eat clean and go green, Veganism emerged as a lifestyle and ethical choice and started gaining steady popularity in India in the last few years, with more and more people engaging actively in what can be termed the Indian Vegan Movement.

Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or any other purpose, as defined by The Vegan Society.
